5/19/2023 0 Comments Rhinoceros eugène ionesco![]() ![]() ![]() It’s like setting a horror movie in a small town.Įveryone expects crazy stuff to happen in huge cities, but we don’t necessarily think a small, country town will serve as the setting for end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it type events. If these people, who live a relatively quiet, decent life can get caught up in the wave of rhinocerosteria (quick, add that word to the dictionary), then anyone can. We get a sense from the opening scene what this place is all about, and we see that people are generally polite and relaxed and not too caught up in the hustle and bustle of things. Setting the play in a small town gives Ionesco the chance to paint a picture of the entire town without having to cover a lot of ground. But wait: Why the small town? Why not throw us in the middle of Paris or London or New York? The scene is a square in a small provincial town. Ionesco spells out the setting of this play from the get-go: Other times not so much (we’re looking at you, Samuel Beckett). Sometimes, playwrights make it easy for you to figure out where you are.
